GREENFIELD — The Indiana Department of Transportation plans to close one lane of U.S. 40 in each direction just east of Greenfield starting Monday for road maintenance.
INDOT crews will chip seal about 15 miles of the highway, weather permitting, between the city and State Road 3 in Dunreith, a news release from INDOT said.
The department advised that drivers should consider an alternative route as road work is being completed because loose rocks will be on the highway temporarily.
Chip seal requires liquid asphalt to be put down on the road and then covered in small stones. These stones can be easily kicked up in traffic, and they can cause damage to the windows and paint of vehicles.
If traveling on U.S. 40 is required, drivers are urged to travel slowly and allow additional space between vehicles.
Temporary pavement markings will be put in place to define lanes, and work zone signs will be on display to advise drivers of hazards.
Once chip seal is complete, the loose stones will be cleared from the highway, and lane markings will be repainted.
The project is expected to take two weeks, but work will be postponed in the event of rain.
