Cougars begin season with win vs. Mt. Vernon
The Greenfield-Central boys track and field team opened the outdoor portion of the season Tuesday with a victory against Mt. Vernon and Frankton.
The Cougars posted 86 points, while the host Marauders secured 75 and the Eagles eight.
Winning events for Greenfield-Central were Josh Woodard (110-meter high hurdles), Austin Herald (100-meter dash), Louise Blaser (400-meter dash), Eli Diehr (300-meter low hurdles), Nick Kiser (200-meter dash), Drayke Tift (long jump), Zach Phillips (discus), the 1,600-meter relay team (Michael Sosnowski, Jason LaFord, Blaser and Tift) and the 3,200 relay team (Syrus Fletcher, Tommy Hembree, Zach Bishop and LaFord).
Picking up victories for the Marauders were Link Hine (pole vault), Wyatt Gutierrez (shot put), Mark Lough (high jump), Aaron Rush (1,600 meters, 800 meters) and Christian Noble (3,200 meters).
“We really took a hammering in the sprints and hurdles and fell far behind,” Mt. Vernon coach Bruce Kendall said. “We rallied in the middle of our distance runners and throwers but could not close the deal.”
The Cougars are next in outdoor action against New Palestine and Shelbyville on April 9 in New Palestine, while the Marauders race again April 1 at Fishers.

Mt. Vernon finishes behind Greenfield girls
Olivia Coleman led the Mt. Vernon girls track team Tuesday night in Fortville, as she won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes as well as the long jump. The Marauders’ Aubri Benbow won the 300 low hurdles.
“The girls survived the cold and windy conditions and performed up to their expectations,” Kendall said.
The Mt. Vernon girls will join the boys April 1 at Fishers.
