James W. Barger, 78, of Fortville, passed away Friday, Jan. 23, 2015, at Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born July 20, 1936, in Bloomington to the late William and Vernetta (Alltop) Barger.

James graduated from Indiana School for the Deaf where he was a standout basketball player. He retired as a proofreader for the Indianapolis Star in 1995.

He was a member of the Madison County Deaf Club, Indiana BASS Association for the Deaf, and Senior Silent Hoosiers.

He enjoyed woodworking and was an avid sports fan, especially of IU Basketball.

James is survived by daughters, Diana Bryson of Indianapolis, Jeanne Scheets of Avon, and Katherine Barger of Indianapolis; son, Larry W. Barger of White City, Kan.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; and brother, Harry Barger of Athens, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice M. Barger in 2008; sister, Betty Cain; and brother, William Barger.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the service begins at 1 p.m. A celebration of James’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Feb. 2, 2015, at Grandview Church of the Brethren, Pendleton.
