Robert Gene Lombard, age 87, of Greenfield, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, at home surrounded by family in Greenfield. Born on Aug. 31, 1924, in Indianapolis, he was the son of Clifford H. and Ruth A. (Gordon) Lombard.
Robert graduated from Warren Central High School in 1943 and married Mary Wulf on March 30, 1946. He worked as the supervisor of shipping and receiving for the American Legion National Headquarters in Indianapolis for 28 years before retiring.
Robert served in the United States Army during WWII and earned a Purple Heart and disabled veteran status. He belonged to the Greenfield American Legion Post #119, the 40/8 Club, and attended St. John United Church of Christ in Cumberland.
Surviving him are his children, Robert H. (Gwen) Lombard of Gainesville, Fla., Suzanne (George) Buchanan of LaGrangeville, N.Y., Karen (Mike) Elsbury of Greenfield, Kathy (Andy) Braden of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Robb Lombard, Steven Elsbury, Duane Elsbury, Julie Elsbury, Andrea Braden Roberts, Christopher Braden, Angie Buchanan Prophet, Marc Buchanan, Rachel Buchanan; and one great-grandchild.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife; grandson, Bryan Buchanan; and brother, Gordon H. Lombard.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, 2011, at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield. Funeral will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, at the mortuary. Burial will take place at St. John Cemetery in Cumberland.
