Robert B. Eagleston, age 97, a resident of Greenfield, retired businessman and long time resident of Hancock County, passed away on Saturday Oct. 29, 2011. He was born on Jan. 7, 1914, in Berkeley, Calif., to the late Frank W. and Nellie M. Eagleston.
Robert was a graduate of Northwestern University. His career included 15 years in western railroad work prior to coming to Greenfield in 1951 to assume management of the Bradley Hall Furniture Company and related business/farm interests, retiring from the former in 1989.
He was married to Frances G. Loudenback of Greenfield following their meeting as students at Northwestern University in 1936, Frances was the daughter of Frank and Ethel Loudenback, longtime residents of Hancock County.
He was a past president of the Greenfield Chamber of Commerce, Greenfield Merchants Association, Kiwanis Club of Greenfield, Riley Old Home Society, and the Hancock County Council on Aging. He also served on the boards of the local and district Boy Scout Councils, Greenfield Civic Improvement Committee, Wabash Valley Association, Riley Festival Committee, County Council on Aging, Hope House Shelter and Greenfield’s early Police and Park Boards.
He was a recipient of the Boy Scout “Silver Beaver” award in 1964, the Greenfield Chamber of Commerce “Community Service” Plaque in 1981 and 1991, and named “Older Hoosier of the Year for Hancock County” by the Central Indiana Council on Aging in 1964, He served as Kiwanis Lt. Governor in 1964, was a 56 year member of Hancock Lodge #101 F&AM and Scottish Rite. He also served many years as a Sunday School Teacher, Trustee and Treasurer of Greenfield Friends Church.
He is survived by his son, John F. Eagleston of New Palestine; daughters, Suzanne Speth of Ft. Collins, Colo., Nancy Lewicki of Houston, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by wife, Frances in 2001; daughter, Frances Nelle in 1970; brother,Quinton Eagleston; and sister, Alicia Vines.
Friends may call from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011, at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, Pasco Chapel, Greenfield. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery, Greenfield.
