Caryl J. Baker, 81 of Greenfield, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2024, at Bethany Village Nursing &Rehabilitation in Indianapolis. She was born on October 31, 1942, in Shelbyville, Indiana to the late James Hubert &Anna Marie (Stader) Baker. Caryl graduated from Greenfield High School with the Class of 1961. She furthered her education and graduated from Ball State University in 1965 receiving her bachelor’s degree in Speech/Hearing.

Caryl proudly served her country in the United States Navy for nearly 20 years. She served as a Naval Instructor and Advanced Hospital Corpsman receiving many medals and decorations, some of which include the Navy Achievement Medal and Commendation Award; Sea Service Deployment Ribbon; and Navy Unit Commendation. After the service Caryl spent years working at Robertson’s Drug Store as a Pharmacy Tech and later at Greenfield Schools as a speech and hearing therapist. Caryl loved sports, following the Colts and Pacers. In her younger years she played basketball, tennis, and bowled. She also enjoyed cross stitching, but most of all Caryl enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Caryl is survived by her siblings, Lt. Col. Earl Baker; Dr. Larry (Sara) Baker; Linda Davis; Cathy Baker; and Cindy (Gary) Sword; brother-in-law, Steve McClain; 15 nieces and nephews; 34 great nieces and nephews; 23 great-great nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Anne Nelson, who she met while serving in the Navy and kept in contact with for over 50 years. Caryl is preceded in death by her parents, sister, Joyce McClain; brother-in-law, James Davis; sister-in-law, Martha Baker; and her dear friend from childhood, Joanne Beeson.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 25, 2024, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Erlewein Mortuary &Crematory, 1484 W. US 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 26, 2024, at 11:00am at the mortuary. Pastor Dennis Hirschauer will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow the service at Park Cemetery in Greenfield.
