GREENFIELD – Spend a day touring Hancock County and five area nonprofits on a luxury bus tour.

The Community Foundation of Hancock County is bringing back its tour May 10.

The biennial tradition is returning for the first time since 2020. Once called the Community Plunge Tour that focused on donors, the new tour coming up is open to anyone who’s interested in learning more about the community and is simply called the Hancock County Community Tour.

The free event will include a set of wireless earbuds. Stops include Agape Therapeutic Riding Resources East, Nameless Creek Camp, Friends of the Theatre, The Alley (Fortville) and the town of McCordsville.

Plan on boarding the bus at 8:15 a.m. at The Thrive Center, 971 W. U.S. 40, Greenfield. Breakfast and lunch are provided. The tour ends at 1:30 p.m.

Emily Wilson, advancement officer for the foundation, said she’s looking forward to the event with a purpose of spreading the word about the impact of financial gifts.

The foundation works primarily with two types of monetary gifts: funds that are restricted to certain charities or projects, and funds that are “unrestricted.” The tour will focus on groups that receive unrestricted grant dollars, which the foundation awards based on needs.

“My hope is our community members would have a better understanding of how our grantmaking works, and what people are able to do when they give to the Community Foundation in an unrestricted manner—because it really allows us to enhance the different projects in our area,” she said.

While any type of giving is useful, when people give to the foundation through unrestricted gifts, the foundation members are able to meet needs of the community.

“Unrestricted allows the community foundation to make grants in areas where we see the most needs,” Wilson said. “The beautiful thing about unrestricted is, it all stays local to Hancock County. Any dollars that are given to the unrestricted fund stays in the community.”

Reserve a seat now, as most of the bus tour is already booked up.

The bus tour is one of several upcoming events the foundation is hosting to spread the word about giving. They are also hosting yoga at the Thrive Center, for example. The event is coming up June 21 with breakfast and a free yoga mat and carrying bag. Updates on events can be found at facebook.com/CelebrateHancockIN.
